Another building collapses in Lagos

A building under construction yesterday
collapsed in the densely populated area
of Ajegunle, Lagos State, leaving several
persons injured. Although no life was
lost, one of the workers escaped death
by the whiskers as residents rescued
him immediately the incident occurred.
An eyewitness, Fatai Balogun, who
claimed to be sleeping in the building
after he was recently ejected from his
one-room apartment at Layinka Street,
said he woke up to observe the early
morning prayer before preparing what
to eat for the fast when he saw part of
the building collapsing.
"I alerted workers who scurried in
different directions. But a brick hit one
of them and he fell down. We rushed to
where he was and carried him out of
the building before the debris could
land on him. But for our swift response,
perhaps he could have died. It was part
of the topmost floor that collapsed.
Obviously, the decking could not sustain
the floor," he said.
One of the construction workers, who
simply gave his name as Femi, said:
"Some of us were working on one side
of the building when it collapsed. No
one can point to what exactly led to the
collapse, as the cement was well mixed.
We are happy that none of us died in
the process.
